The Drug

“The Drug” is a song we felt needed to be written. My dad and I have both lost people to heroin and opioid addiction. We felt it necessary to write a song about the hurt we feel, and the pain the victims suffer. Our hometown in Ohio is close to Columbus, one of the highest “heroin used” cities in the United States! We wrote 90% of this song on a 3 hour trip to Cleveland, OH. When we got home, we kept practicing it and began recording. We said we’d finish the song the next day and we went to bed for the night.

My dad woke up at 2 a.m. and started recording downstairs in our studio basement, and I could hear the emotion in his voice as I came down to help him record. (This happens all the time. We can’t sleep when we got music on our mind) When I finished writing my rap for the song, I was super emotional as well and laid my verse down after him. We wanted the song to be as authentic as possible, so we left our voice as plain as we could so you can hear our true emotion. Below is a snippet of the track, as well as the lyrics. Italicized are common street words for heroin.

“The Drug” Lyrics

(Verse 1)

I close my eyes, to see your face

I’m still here, but in this place

I’m so far away

I fly so high, can catch my breath

Fading fast, close death

Can I stay, with you?

(Chorus)

So will you catch me when I fall

I’m under attack, and your my walls

For me, for you

So can I have this dance

Kaleidoscope, I’m in your trance

For your love, your love is the drug my veins

(Verse 2)

China White, I see the light

This rubber band is so damn tight

What the hell have I done

This horse is racing so damn fast

There’s so many hurdles, in my path

And have I finally come undone

(Chorus)

So will you catch me when I fall

I’m under attack, and your my walls

For me, for you

So can I have this dance

Kaleidoscope, I’m in your trance

For your loves, your love is the drug my veins

(Rap)

I’m stuck in the mud, black tar, with the needle

I might destruct, I depart, just to see you

I’m missing your love, Cinemark, I need a sequel

I’m lost in the drug, but my heart, is so peaceful

Our time is worth the crime, High is so benign

I’ll change the paradigm, Align in your sublime

This dragon I will ride, With thunder on my mind

These mountains I will climb, But I despise the climb

Shit… Am I hallucinating

Or are you really here to save me

I can pinpoint, the ominous is obvious

It’s enough to drive ya crazy

Heartbeats slowly fading away

21 grams of weight

Would you still love me if I stayed?

Well maybe that’s today

(Chorus)

So will you catch me when I fall

I’m under attack, and your my walls

For me, for you

So can I have this dance

Kaleidoscope, I’m in your trance

For your love, your love is the drug my…
